MyPath at World Cancer Congress 2022
From 18 – 20 October, more than 1,500 cancer experts convened in Geneva to attend the 2022 World Cancer Congress organised by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). As chair of the ESMO Designated Centres Working Group, MyPath coordinator Stein Kaasa presented about ESMO’s initiatives to integrate palliative care within oncology, which included the MyPath project. The talk was part of a highlight session titled ‘Integration of Palliative Care into Standard Oncology Care: Is it working?’, in which benefits of this integration as well as barriers to its implementation were explored by an oncology expert panel.
Press release: MyPath puts cancer patients’ needs and values at the forefront of their care trajectory
In current practice in Europe, the primary focus of cancer care is to treat the tumour. However, the optimal care plan for a particular patient is also determined by factors beyond medical ones and therefore varies from person to person. Research in palliative and supportive care has demonstrated the benefits of including a patient-centred care approach, with greater involvement of the patient in decisions about their treatment. Nevertheless, this evidence has not been systematically integrated into oncology. MyPath is a new EU-funded, multi-stakeholder research project that aims to integrate patient-centred care into routine cancer care. To achieve this, it will develop and implement an innovative digital solution that facilitates communication between healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers.
MyPath presented at the ESMO congress
Last Friday, September 9, our coordinator Prof. Stein Kaasa (Oslo University Hospital) gave a talk on the MyPath project at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) congress in Paris, France. ESMO, a partner in our consortium, is the leading professional organisation for medical oncology with more than 25,000 members representing oncology professionals from over 160 countries worldwide. The MyPath presentation was part of a special session on new developments in integrated oncology and palliative care.
MyPath successfully kicks off in Oslo
On September 1 and 2, the whole consortium came together in Oslo, Norway for the official MyPath kick-off meeting. The event, hosted by the Oslo University Hospital, provided all 36 participants with the opportunity to get to know each other and all partners’ roles and responsibilities within the project in more detail. Furthermore, the Project Advisor from the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) gave an introduction to the European Commission’s health research activities and an overview of key requirements for Horizon Europe projects. After many insightful presentations and fruitful discussions, we are excited about the start of this project journey and look forward to collaborating in the coming five years.

MyPath project to start in September 2022
We are happy to announce that the MyPath project will officially start on the 1st September 2022 and will run for 5 years. The project brings together 14 partners from research, clinics, SMEs and NGOs to collaboratively develop and implement novel patient-centred care pathways (PCCPs), patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) and treatment decision support incorporated in a user-friendly digital platform. MyPath will be integrated in routine cancer care and studied in 9 cancer centres in Europe to prove its effectiveness and sustainability.
